Kyla McMullen-Dent
Director
Kyla completed her elementary, secondary and post-secondary
education in North Bay, Ontario. She received an Honours BA
in Sociology and a Bachelor of Education Degree from Nipissing
University. This education was but the portal to an ongoing
search for knowledge in areas of social justice, education,
environmental sustainability, poverty, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Interestingly, it would be her three trips to Africa that would
impel her to take action.
Kyla has been teaching for twelve years for the Trillium Lakelands
District School Board. Her goal is not to just graduate students,
but to graduate critical thinking, community minded, empathetic,
and globally active young leaders.
The eldest of four children, Kyla would say she was taught
the value of activism and philanthropy early in life. Her need
to address injustice and to seek answers stem from the profound
influence of strong orators (famous or not) as well as the
incredible power of language to effect change. Married to Greg
Dent, Kyla is truly grateful for his input and continuous support
of her work for Harambee 4 Humanity.
The establishment and growth of the not-for-profit organization,
Harambee 4 Humanity, is a testament to her limitless energy
and dedication. Her inspiration, by her own testimony, comes
from the resourcefulness and resilience of the Kenyan people,
as well as the many acts of kindness shown by family members,
friends, volunteers, community groups, and donors. Kyla is
very grateful for the generous donation of time and money by
everyone, particularly the staff and students of schools who
have supported H4H projects over the last three years. Many
supporters have worked diligently and untiringly to “link
hands through action”.
Natalie McMullen
Secretary
Natalie is a tireless idealist, and a raving cynic. She believes
we should all be more honest and less polite. She thinks
it’s important, every once in a while, to wilfully
place yourself in an uncomfortable situation. She likes foreign
films with no plot and taking pictures of stains on sidewalks.
Natalie is passionate about music, food, dancing, and getting
to the truth of the matter. She believes that when two people
fall in love, they hold the secret to world peace, and the
seed of war between them.
Natalie is returning to school to do a Master’s in
Applied Languages & Linguistics in the fall of 2009,
where she hopes to expand her understanding of conflict within
interpersonal relationships, and draw links to its broader
social, cultural, and political implications. For the past
several years, Natalie has worked for provincial, national
and internationally-focused not-for-profit organizations
in the areas of Gender, Disarmament, and the Environment.
In 2004/2005 she interned with a Sexual & Reproductive
Health organization in Nairobi, Kenya. Natalie has recently
joined Women’s Worlds Congress 2011, where she will
continue in the role of Research Assistant, on a part-time
basis, throughout her studies.
Natalie has greatly influenced the philosophy and mission
of Harambee 4 Humanity. While her contributions are many,
we are most excited by her introduction of the washable sanitary
pad to the Kenyan women.
Marcia Delgado
Officer
Marcia is a devoted educator who works tirelessly to impart
knowledge, encourage critical thinking and to help her
students make global connections. She continually reflects
on her teacher practice while also staying abreast of new
curriculum initiatives and teaching methods. While students
may initially be unsure of what they are experiencing,
they soon come to love Marcia’s spontaneous singing,
dancing, and musical interludes (of an international flavour)
which usually break up their day. Students in Marcia’s
class benefit immensely from her professionalism, global
awareness, creativity and heart.
Marcia is a passionate Brazilian, the eldest of six girls,
born in Volta Redonda, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Her educational background includes: An Honours Bachelor
Degree in Communications and an Honours Bachelor Degree
in Translation and Interpretation from the Catholic University
of Rio de Janeiro. Marcia earned her Bachelor of Education
from Nipissing University in 1995. She is currently teaching
a Grade 5 classroom for the Trillium Lakelands District
School Board. Marcia’s interests include: Foreign
languages and cultures, travelling, reading, dancing, the
natural environment, and international cooperation. Marcia
lives outside of Bracebridge, ON with her husband, Erik
and daughter, Marina.
Jennifer Clark
Treasurer
Jennifer Clark is a Canadian educator who has taught in several countries including
England and Japan. Jennifer’s experiences in education include teaching,
coaching, mentoring, and system leader. She is currently a Curriculum Consultant
working with Ontario teachers to study how high impact strategies enhance literacy
instruction. Jennifer has enjoyed the cultural opportunities provided by travelling
North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Andrew Smith
Officer
Andrew Smith grew up in the northern community of North Bay,
Ontario. He completed his undergraduate degrees in physiology
and medicine at the University of Toronto. It was at this
stage in his life, following a six month volunteer position
in Cato Ridge, South Africa, that he developed an interest
in international health. He currently calls Calgary, Alberta
home where he is in the second year of a five year general
surgery residency.
Andrew’s interest in international surgery and the
equitable access to health care resources continues to influence
his training as a general surgeon. He is pleased to be a
part of Harambee 4 Humanity and looks forward to implementing
his experience as a physician towards achieving the mission
statement put forward by the organization.
