About Us

Harambee 4 Humanity (H4H) was established in March, 2007 by Kyla McMullen-Dent. Kyla is an elementary school teacher, and lives with her husband Greg in Orillia, Ontario.

Since 2007 H4H has grown and gained considerable momentum through the vision, generosity, enthusiasm, and will of many individuals and communities at home and abroad.

Please visit the Board of Directors, In-Country partners, or Volunteers section to learn more about the contributions made by individuals and groups working with Harambee 4 Humanity.

Mission

Harambee 4 Humanity seeks to create opportunity and to reduce suffering by collaborating with individuals and communities on sustainable initiatives that maximize the area’s human and natural resources.

Philosophy and Approach

Harambee 4 Humanity means ‘pulling together’ in Kiswahili. Our main objective is to collaborate with individuals and communities to ensure that their basic rights are met so they can achieve their full potential and lead and participate in their own sustainable development.

The work that we do is developmental. That means we do not impose ideas simply because we believe they will be effective, or because they have proven successful in other places. We are here to support, facilitate, guide, coordinate, and act as a resource and liaison on community-led initiatives. While we are committed to responding creatively to needs and challenges that arise, and making suggestions based on best practices and lessons learned, ultimately our role is to enable, not direct.

H4H strongly believes in the power of networking and peer education. In order to strengthen the capacity of individuals and communities to carry out sustainable development projects successfully, where appropriate, we will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practices, and offer opportunities for mentorship and training.

One of H4H’s guiding principles is that all areas of our lives are interconnected. We are committed to responding to challenges and opportunities in a holistic and sustainable manner. With every project we collaborate on, we will consider the environmental impact, and where possible, seek opportunities to reduce harm, and increase potential benefits to the natural world.
